All in an edition of three.   Clair obscur Photograph about the idea of clair obscur.   De maat van de muziek Crossing Border Some posters I made for a contest organised by the Crossing Border festival in The Hague.   Dagschotel A project about how day is three in one. All in an edition of three.   De maat van de muziek The uitkrant is a dutch magazine which provides information about theatre shows, concerts and that kind of things. It was a contest for all second year graphic design students. The illustration of the winners were placed in the magazine. I was one of the winners. I made an illustration by the theme ‘enjoy music’. I chose for a t-shirt because I figured that it has the same qualities as music does; its flexible, it fits around you, it belongs to you etcetera. That’s also why I used the text ‘de maat van de muziek’ for the label of the shirt. It’s a wordgame in Dutch, because size and rythym are the same word, namely ‘maat’. And by saying that the size is the rhythm you combine all the qualities of the music into a shirt.   Gordon Matta-Clark Die Blechtrommel Poster I made for the movie die Blechtrommel.   Die woorden willen zoveel zijn New characters I designed with pieces of photograhs which I found in the bin in the dark room. The thought behind it is that things that are of no use for the people who made them can have a whole new life in your eyes,   Gordon Matta-Clark We were asked to write a thesis on a self chosen subject. Mine was the artist Gordon Matta-Clark. I find his work very interesting and fascinating. For the design of this thesis I used affiches of him that I collected at a expo where his work was shown. By clipping the text on it you get the feeling you can change the structure of things. Which is, in my opinion, a very Gordon Matta-Clark thing to do.   Hutspot #11 Grotestedenbeleid A illustration I made for a contest of the ‘grote steden beleid’ of our dutch government. In the end they used my illustration on the invitation which was sent to all the guests.   Hero Poster I made for the movie Hero.   Hutspot #11 Publication for a classmate. She made new clothes of old ones. I wanted to show the way she worked. I used all the framents of text she had in her dummie and used that as the content of the magazine. I also photographed the prints she made and together with the text this gives a good example of the endresult (which isn’t completely but partly in the magazine).   Letterlijk Infographics General system to show different kind of data sets.   Karakterschetsen Poster for an imaginary exposition.   Letterlijk Magazine I made consisting of lyrics and fragments of books that I don’t want to forget.   Mercuur Love & Thanks poster Love & Thanks is a project I made during my third year at the art academy. My aim was to make people aware of the possibilities of positive energy. The title, love and thanks, refers to the work of a Japanse researcher called Masaru Emoto, who believes that by saying positive things to the water, the water changes its structure. I convinced myself of this theory and used it as a possibility to solve the waterissues we have nowadays. Main questions were if it’s about saying positive things or is it about having a positive intention. I wanted to give the message to the water, therefore I made a movie where you see text dissapear in the water. The same idea I wanted to have in my typography. So I made a system for my letters so they could dissolve more and more. The project consists of six posters, a manifest (in ten different appearances), a movie, an animation and a t-shirt.   Mentale ruimte A project about the relative and not metric apsect of space. Space that you experience inside your head. Space that is relative and not absolute.   Mercuur Bussiness card for a company called Mercuur. Mercuur consists of two people, who are more or less eachothers opposites. So I decided two give them both a different colour. I used red and blue (also opposites) and I used the mix of both colours (purple) as the 'identity' of the company. Each person has one side of the card.   Publicatie Elly van den Hout Ondraaglijke lichtheid van het bestaan For a project called ‘mentale ruimte’ or mental space in English I used a second hand version of the book The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. I did this because I didn’t want to start on a perfect blank paper, but on the pages of a book that I very much like. This made me feel fine and miserable at the same time. The images that are part of this project show notes and drawings that I made in the sketch phase of this project. Later you’ll see that the end results of the mental space project look a little different from the things I made in the book.   Portret Elly Portrait of Elly van den Hout. She is an artist who's work balances on the edge between a certain roughness and a more conservative approach. That’s why I decided o work with two totally differnt kinds of material; plastic and cotton threads. I sewed her portrait on the plastic.   Publicatie Elly van den Hout Publication of the work of artist Elly van den Hout. Instead of just showing her work I wanted to make a publication where you receive a lot of information. In order to show that it's not only about the wat it looks, but also about the material, size and title of the project I decided to organize her work in three different ways: on size, on title and on date. This way you get the same information more than once, but each time you focuse on other things. In the end I only used three images of her work and still the publication tells you a lot about the artist.   Space / Place Raison d'être Collective term for free sketches I make.   Ruimte Poster for a congres about town-planning. About different views on how to use the small amount of space we've left.   Space / Place A reader about space and place. Space and place require eachother for a definition. They are different but only in an abstract form. You can't really translate them to the physical world. This reader consists of experiments and text about pace and place.   Visuele muziek Theo / I.K. Portrait of Theo van Doesburg. My aim was to show his different personalities, his alterego’s. His 'De Stijl' side as well as his 'Dada' side.   Times A poster made as a gift for a classmate. I thought that the best gift would be a piece of advice. And so I used the sentence ‘Er zijn veel wegen, Er is niet één Rome’. Or in English; There are many ways, There isn’t one Rome. By using that sentence I wanted to let her know that there are more ways to more than one end result. Or in other words, you can’t know everything when you’ve just started designing. You just have to follow the trail and let things happen.   Visuele muziek We had to design a new kind of sheet music by using only typographic elements. I chose Bright Eyes’ ‘Time Code’.   Wateris Waarom ik niet ben waar jij bent A book about the author Jonathan Safran Foer. In the book I used an interview, some short fragments out of his book and a short story to show different sides of his personality as a writer. There’s also a part with photographs. This are photographs taken by a random people (I gave a camera to a friend of mine, who gave it to a friend of her etcetera). The theme of the photographs is the same as the title of the book; ‘waarom ik niet ben waar jij bent’.   Wateris Logo I made for a company called 'wateris'. Wateris means 'what there is'. It’s about a constant flow, things that change and opposite directions.
