De maat van de muziek
The uitkrant is a dutch magazine which provides information about theatre shows, concerts and that kind of things. It was a contest for all second year graphic design students. The illustration of the winners were placed in the magazine. I was one of the winners. I made an illustration by the theme ‘enjoy music’. I chose for a t-shirt because I figured that it has the same qualities as music does; its flexible, it fits around you, it belongs to you etcetera. That’s also why I used the text ‘de maat van de muziek’ for the label of the shirt. It’s a wordgame in Dutch, because size and rythym are the same word, namely ‘maat’. And by saying that the size is the rhythm you combine all the qualities of the music into a shirt. |

We were asked to write a thesis on a self chosen subject. Mine was the artist Gordon Matta-Clark. I find his work very interesting and fascinating. For the design of this thesis I used affiches of him that I collected at a expo where his work was shown. By clipping the text on it you get the feeling you can change the structure of things. Which is, in my opinion, a very Gordon Matta-Clark thing to do. |

Love & Thanks is a project I made during my third year at the art academy. My aim was to make people aware of the possibilities of positive energy. The title, love and thanks, refers to the work of a Japanse researcher called Masaru Emoto, who believes that by saying positive things to the water, the water changes its structure. I convinced myself of this theory and used it as a possibility to solve the waterissues we have nowadays. Main questions were if it’s about saying positive things or is it about having a positive intention. I wanted to give the message to the water, therefore I made a movie where you see text dissapear in the water. The same idea I wanted to have in my typography. So I made a system for my letters so they could dissolve more and more. The project consists of six posters, a manifest (in ten different appearances), a movie, an animation and a t-shirt. |

Bussiness card for a company called Mercuur. Mercuur consists of two people, who are more or less eachothers opposites. So I decided two give them both a different colour. I used red and blue (also opposites) and I used the mix of both colours (purple) as the 'identity' of the company. Each person has one side of the card. |

For a project called ‘mentale ruimte’ or mental space in English I used a second hand version of the book The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. I did this because I didn’t want to start on a perfect blank paper, but on the pages of a book that I very much like. This made me feel fine and miserable at the same time. The images that are part of this project show notes and drawings that I made in the sketch phase of this project. Later you’ll see that the end results of the mental space project look a little different from the things I made in the book. |

Publication of the work of artist Elly van den Hout. Instead of just showing her work I wanted to make a publication where you receive a lot of information. In order to show that it's not only about the wat it looks, but also about the material, size and title of the project I decided to organize her work in three different ways: on size, on title and on date. This way you get the same information more than once, but each time you focuse on other things. In the end I only used three images of her work and still the publication tells you a lot about the artist. |

A poster made as a gift for a classmate. I thought that the best gift would be a piece of advice. And so I used the sentence ‘Er zijn veel wegen, Er is niet één Rome’. Or in English; There are many ways, There isn’t one Rome. By using that sentence I wanted to let her know that there are more ways to more than one end result. Or in other words, you can’t know everything when you’ve just started designing. You just have to follow the trail and let things happen. |

A book about the author Jonathan Safran Foer. In the book I used an interview, some short fragments out of his book and a short story to show different sides of his personality as a writer. There’s also a part with photographs. This are photographs taken by a random people (I gave a camera to a friend of mine, who gave it to a friend of her etcetera). The theme of the photographs is the same as the title of the book; ‘waarom ik niet ben waar jij bent’. |
